Formations in the "Cave Without a Name," located near Boerne in Kendall County, Texas. It has been commercially operated as a show cave and open for public tours since 1939. The cave went largely unnoticed again until the 1920s during the era of Prohibition when a small moonshine distillery was installed in the uppermost cavern. It again fell into obscurity until three local farm children rediscovered the sinkhole in 1935. The show cave received its name after its official opening in 1939, when a young boy suggested that the cave "was too beautiful to have a name." Original image from Carol M. Sanctuary of the Nativity of Mary, Blessed Virgin Catholic Church, also known as the St. Mary Catholic Church, in High Hill, a little community near Schulenberg in Fayette County, Texas. This is considered the "queen" of what Texans call their "painted churches." Its decorative paintings were executed by Ferdinand Stockert and Hermann Kern in 1912. The Mexican artillery goes into action at the annual Battle of San Jacinto Festival and Battle Reenactment, a living-history retelling and demonstration of the historic Battle of San Jacinto. This was the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. Santa Anna, the President of Mexico, was captured the following day and held as a prisoner of war. Three weeks later, he signed the peace treaty that dictated that the Mexican army leave the region, paving the way for the Republic of Texas to become an independent country. The neighborhood celebrates a former livestock market that operated under various owners from 1866. The sixth-floor storeroom of the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas, where Lee Harvey Oswald, the presumed (by most) assassin of President John F. Kennedy, found a perch above Dealey Plaza, along which Kennedy, Texas governor John Connally, who was wounded, and their wives rode in an open touring car on Nov. 22, 1963. Rock drawings, or pictographs, in a restricted area of Hueco Tanks State Historic Site near El Paso in El Paso County, Texas. The more than 200 "mask drawings" in the park -- the most in North America -- are the artistic legacy of different prehistoric peoples who, over several millennia, found water, feed, and shelter at this stone oasis in the desert. The "tanks" are geological depressions that catch rainwater, attracting animals and human settlement in the otherwise-dry high-desert surroundings.
